Our family has had so many cats over the years, we can't count them! And the ones that lived the longest -- lived indoors. I originally spent time on the farm and everyone's attitude about cats was quite different when it came to indoor/outdoor policies. I'd get laughed out loud at by my farmer friends... but they never really had the same connection to pets that my city friends had and couldn't quite understand that cats are more than little mouse hunting machines for the barn. It started to dawn on me back then that my beloved kitty would disappear within a couple of years of life. Perhaps coyotes would get them or they'd wander off never to be seen again. I would be heart broken. So back in the suburbs my other cat-loving friends wouldn't dream of keeping their cats indoors and would always be so upset when they got hurt by other animals in a fight, ate tainted food sources, got fatal feline aids or leukemia from other cats, or went missing. I eventually changed my mind completely on why I should keep my pet indoors. They will live a healthier, more safe life and will adapt to not being able to roam free. Whenever I see a cat or dog that's been hit by a vehicle it reminds me that the animal's parent was being unrealistic as to their safety. They say that cats develop to the intelligence of a 3 year old human. Would I allow my 3 year old to roam the streets? Never! The answer to taking a cat outdoors is putting them on a leash! They fall over and react quite hilariously to having the harness put on. It's a great idea to do this indoors for awhile as they will get used to the harness.
